We are shutting down Acter App and Service by February 2026

After much reflection, we have made the difficult decision to shut down the current Acter Service by February 1st, 2026. The current Acter App is already not available for fresh installation anymore on the App stores and it will seize to function (if you use our homeserver) by February 1st, 2026.

This year, like many organizations in our field, we have faced uncertainties: from a shifting funding landscape to broader challenges beyond our control. We’ve had to take a realistic look at what we can continue to sustain. As you might know, maintaining an app requires ongoing funding, including the work of paid staff to ensure functionality, security, and updates. At this time, we do not have the resources to continue supporting the current version of Acter. This step is necessary so that we can focus our limited resources on sustaining our core operations while continuing to pursue new funding opportunities.

If you or your movement depends on Acter, we kindly recommend moving to another Matrix.org (https://matrix.org/ecosystem/) based app and homeserver on before the end of February. We know this may feel complex especially for those of you managing large networks. We’re glad to help with your transition, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via community@acter.global. We are here to give you some guidance and support you through the process and will do everything we can to make the transition easier.

If you are using the Acter App and registered the account with it or only have a matrix account on our homeserver (@something:acter.global) please migrate to a different matrix server as soon as possible. As you won’t able to use (or migrate off) anymore after February 1st, 2026.

The changes also mean we need to let go most of our staff, however Acter as organization remains still running after, including our Executive Officer & Founder Emil Vincentz (emil@acter.global).

We want to take a moment to thank you for your trust and support of Acter so far. Everything we’ve been able to do with Acter has been possible because of your encouragement, and belief in our mission. We are deeply grateful for every partner, supporter, and community member who has stood by us.
